Enjoy a movie at the cinema, a drink at a bar, visit a museum or two and have a rest for a day or two while waiting for the ferry. I found prices to be reasonable, and this probably would have been one of my favorite resupplies if the store wasn’t so crowded. During the peak periods of Christmas and New Year they may already be fully booked. Hanmer Springs was a decent-sized town with plenty of restaurants and takeaways but only one supermarket: a Four Square. Palmerston North (KM 1468.6) | There was a Countdown right along the trail on the outskirts of Palmerston North, but I skipped it and decided to walk through the city center. This mountain range has notoriously bad weather and it is possible to be stuck in a hut for several days waiting for the weather to pass. The next good resupply is Huntly 106km away but there are many places for meals and snacks along the way. The Four Square was expensive. They also have an attached cafe/take away food. It is an important Te Araroa resupply option for those not wanting to carry every bit of clothing or equipment they have with them. There is a single, small Four Square that’s your only option. This would have been a great place to resupply, but I was basically living dairy to dairy and had hardly touched my food bag, so I decided to wait to get food in Waipu. Most people hitch or organise a shuttle from Lake Coleridge to Methven. About 14% of the trail is road walking with around 40% going over private land, which requires negotiations for through-access with landowners, councils and local indigenous Maori tribes.
